Performance is a feature

Speed is the feature nobody asks for and everybody notices. On a corporate site a fast page isn't an engineering vanity metric — it's conversion, credibility and search visibility, all wearing the same disguise.

The unglamorous truth is that most sites are slow by accident, and fixing it is one of the highest-return, lowest-drama investments available.

What slow actually costs

Users don't experience your architecture. They experience the wait. To them, that's the whole product.

Where the weight goes

Slowness is rarely one big mistake; it's an accumulation, usually in four places:

Building fast on purpose

Set a budget

Decide up front how heavy a page is allowed to be. A performance budget turns speed from an afterthought into a constraint the whole team designs within.

Ship less JavaScript

The fastest script is the one you never send. Rendering content as HTML and adding interactivity only where it's genuinely needed — the approach behind the framework this very site is built on — keeps pages light by default.

Right-size the assets

Modern image formats, correct dimensions, lazy-loading below the fold, and self-hosted fonts with sensible fallbacks. Unglamorous, and enormously effective.

Serve from the edge

Static pages on a global CDN are fast everywhere, cheap to run and hard to knock over. For most corporate sites it's the right default.

Measure what users feel

Track real-world Core Web Vitals, not just a lab score on your own fast laptop. Optimise for the experience your actual visitors have.

The quiet advantage

A fast site rarely gets complimented — but it converts better, ranks higher and makes every other thing you do work harder. Performance isn't the polish you add at the end. It's a feature you decide to build in from the start.
